Acupuncture today is widely accepted worldwide as a valid form of treatment for many types of ailment. Acupuncture treats diseases, injuries and some mental problems by intervention through the body’s unseen energy field, (the “Chi” or Qi”), which is concentrated in a series of “channels” or “meridians” and specific points within the vertebrate body. These channels and points are not directly related to nerves or other physical body parts.
WHAT IS QI (CHI)?
When Chi flows freely through the meridians, the body is balanced and healthy, but if the energy becomes blocked, stagnated or weakened, it can result in physical, mental and emotional ill health. An imbalance in a persons body can result from inappropriate emotional ill health. An imbalance in a person’s body can result from deep grief and fear. Environmental factors such as cold, damp/humidity, wind, dryness, and heat can also cause imbalance. Other factors such as poor diet, too much sex, overwork and too much exercise can also cause imbalance in our energy systems. To restore the balance the acupuncturist stimulates the acupuncture points that will counteract that imbalance by inserting a very thin needle at designated points and leaving it to act, generally 30-45 minutes.
CHINESE ACUPUNCTURE IN THE WEST
In the past the thought of being “needled” was considered by many in the Western world to be ineffective, some even thought it stupid. Acupuncture is thought to have originated in China nearly 5000 years ago and has been used extensively in China to treat many kinds of ailments since. In the 20th century it became more popular with many Westerners becoming more interested in this form of treatment. It took a lot of solid successes for this method of treatment to become established in the west. To this day there are many in the health professions who do not acknowledge acupuncture as a valid form of treatment, despite the fact that it has been in existence and used for thousands of years.
I myself several years ago developed hundreds of tiny little ulcerations on both my corneas brought on by an emotional event in my life which possibly weakened my immune system, I sought the help of three different ophthalmologists in the space of two months, none of them offered me any hope after trying various medications and all failing to help me; they told me that the ulcerations would eventually leave scars on the corneas and that it would affect my vision, as it was I couldn’t even drive or go shopping. One Ophthalmologist offered me medication in the way of eye drops and told me that the medication could also cause blindness. In desperation I visited an alternative practitioner who gave me a combination of moxibustion and acupuncture, within one week the ulcerations started to disappear and within two were all gone, so my experience was an extremely positive one and I sing their praises every day, I have no scarring and my vision returned to normal.
As in Western medicine there are certain diseases and conditions that acupuncture cannot treat and in fact won’t treat, but acupuncture used as a complementary treatment to “western” medicine has a firm place in the world today. It is not an isolated type of treatment; but often applied in conjunction with moxibustion and Chinese herbal remedies, cupping, pulse diagnosis and Chinese herbal medicine (TCM).
Many people have needle phobia and assume acupuncture is as invasive as say a blood test, no so, acupuncture is considerably different; the needles are much finer and are solid as opposed to a needle which is used for injections. When the needle is inserted the sensation is often described as a tingling or dull ache. Acupuncture needles are inserted either for a second or two but more usually for a long period 30 minutes or sometimes a bit longer depending on the treatment given by the acupuncturist. During treatment patients commonly experience heaviness in the limbs or a pleasant feeling of relaxation. Occasionally people may experience drowsiness after treatment, in which case it is advisable not to drive or do anything that can put you at risk.
Today some medical insurances cover acupuncture treatment. If you have a condition that is not getting positive results through conventional methods acupuncture may well be the answer.health related websites
