WHO GETS LIVER CANCER?

When patients or physicians speak of liver cancer, however, they are often referring to cancer that has spread to the liver, having originated in other organs (such as the colon, stomach, pancreas, breast, and lung). More specifically, this type of liver cancer is called metastatic liver disease (cancer) or secondary liver cancer. Thus, the term liver cancer actually can refer to either metastatic liver cancer or hepatocellular cancer. The subject of this article is hepatocellular carcinoma, which will be referred to as liver cancer.
CANCER AND CARE AFTER TREATMENT
After treatment for liver cancer there should be a good follow up regime with your health care provider. This is a must, because of the high rate of recurrence in patients who have been treated and because of the high risk of developing a secondary liver cancer in patients with severe liver cirrhosis. Routine follow-up care should be performed every 3-6 months for several years following treatment.
Follow-up care should include treatment of underlying medical problems such as hepatitis or alcoholism, routine blood tests. Prompt evaluation and treatment of suspicious findings is critical.
