Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) in Children

If you are a parent and experiencing difficulty with your young child you you can very well feel at the end of your rope, you have probably consulted doctors only to be told that he or she is normal and to all intent your child looks normal and more than likely has a high IQ, but there is still something that is holding your child back from performing well in school.

Attention deficit hyperactive disorder in children seems to be on the rise. Today many children are diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactive disorder and treatment usually is in the form of a stimulant (Ritalin). If you are a parents that does not feel happy with this form of treatment, there are other ways to help your child, the worst thing you can do is ignore it, hoping that it will go away. The symptoms of ADHD in many children will diminish with age and in other cases it can progress into a diminished sense of self, resulting in low self esteem leading to other more sinister behaviors such as alcoholism and drug addiction, mental health problems and eating addictions.

Studies with high-resolution MRI’s showing three-dimensional maps of the brains of children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) indicate significant and specific anatomical differences within areas of the brain thought to control attentional and inhibitory control systems, compared with brain scans of children without ADHD.

They found that children with lesser volumes of gray matter generally were more inattentive, whereas children with significantly larger frontal lobes had higher levels of hyperactivity.

It is still unknown as to what causes ADHD, but there are indications in some quarters that it could be, that some children have an adverse reaction to immunization, or have food sensitives. whatever the cause, your child must be treated in the best way possible and as soon as possible so that your child will grow and develop normally. Often a bright intelligent child who is disruptive in school will be labelled as naughty and there may well be kids that are just simply naughty, in these cases behavior modification would be the best course of action, BUT if your child is repeatedly coming home with request for you to visit the school to talk to the principle about his behavior then you can suspect that he or she may have an attention deficit hyperactive disorder. It is a good idea to have your child checked for heavy metals.

Symptoms of Attention deficit hyperactive disorder

  • Poor concentration
  • Inattentive behavior
  • Easily distracted
  • Difficulty organizing
  • Fidgeting
  • Tendency to talk a lot and interrupt others whilst talking

Ways in which you can help your child with ADHD

Herbs and vitamins (Always seek a professional naturapath’s advice, preferably one who specialises in ADHD)

  • Vitamin B6
  • Magnesium
  • Taurine
  • Zinc
  • L-tyrosine
  • Grapeseed Extract

One of the most important vitamins you can give your ADHD child is cod liver oil, around half a teaspoon daily, it is high in natural vitamin A and essential fatty acids which help brain cells to connect. Make sure the fish oil you buy is molecularly distilled, some fish oils may be contaminated with heavy metals. Heavy metal testing is especially important because heavy metals such as mercury and lead are such a common cause of behavior disorders in children. It is amazing to see how thinking improves once the metals are out! Removing heavy metals must be supervised by a qualified practitioner. Omega-3 is also important for brain function. Make sure your child has heavy metal free fish in his diet.

Small changes can make a big difference to your ADHD child

  • Provide small frequent meals, this will stabilize your child’s blood sugar, very important
  • Avoid sweets, carbonated soft drinks, cordials with artificial ingredients and most snack foods in packets
  • Make sure your child has regular physical exercise, helps with the hyperactive behaviors
  • Limit TV, video games, computer games – all of these work to shorten attention span and decrease focus
  • Make sure your child has a healthy breakfast each day before school

Other therapies that are helpful for your ADHD child

  • Acupuncture
  • Craniosacral therapy
  • Homeopathy
  • It is important that you spend quality time with your ADHD child and above all as difficult as it may be, learn to be patient with him or her, they may require special one on one teaching. Many schools today are aware of these children and the problems they face and give special attention to them.
