There are many avenues you can take to overcome depression and anxiety naturally. Studies show that Omega 3 is highly beneficial in the treatment of depression and anxiety. This can be a debilitating illness that affects day to day living for the sufferer and can cause great disharmony amongst families. It is a disorder that controls the mind and its functions causing loss of appetite, sleeplessness, mood swings, and a deep sense of despair.
SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY
The symptoms of depression are varied and changes from day to day. According to experts depression and anxiety can be an inherited disorder, or caused by a life threatening illnesses, death of loved one or stress. Other causes are certain diseases, medicines, drugs, alcohol, or mental illnesses. Women are seen to experience depression more than men and this is attributed to hormonal swings, menstrual cycle changes, pregnancy, miscarriage, pre-menopause, and post-menopause.

For many the first place we go to get help is our General Practitioner and this is highly recommended, but too often we leave the doctors surgery with a bag of prescription pills or at least one lot of pills, these are often in the form of anti-depressants. For some people a course of anti-depressants may do the trick and get you back on track. I am not an advocate of prescription medication and I believe that a pill is only a temporary solution, especially when there are more natural options.
NATURAL THERAPIES FOR DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY
Alternative therapies, meditation, herbal supplements and other forms of natural healing are all natural methods we can employ when feeling deflated, depressed or anxious. Over the years I have tried many different forms of natural healing such as, meditation, kinesiology, Reiki, hypnosis, acupuncture, the list is long and I guess the journey in self discovery and finding contentment will never end for me, but in each case I have found most natural therapies I have tried to be useful and helpful.
Depression and anxiety can be a wake up call to trigger positive changes in our lives and there should be no shame attached to depression, we all experience it at some point in our lives.
Most of us suffer varying degrees of depression in our lives at some point. Most of us make mistakes or make the wrong decisions at some point in our lives which can trigger a bout of depression, we sometimes make the same mistakes over and over again until they become so painful that change is forced upon us whether it be for the improvement of our health or our spiritual well being and awareness. If one can look at the adversities of our lives as a an opportunity to grow spiritually or improve our health, then you are able to overcome obstacles much more easily. If we are in anyway abusing our bodies by resorting to mood altering drugs or other destructive behaviors our spiritual well being will suffer and there will always be a consequence, this can affect us mentally or physically which can result in depression or anxiety. Some of the situations presented to you throughout your life will often give you the opportunity to make better decisions or choices. Some of these situations presented to you may seem seem unjust or it could be something you think you don’t deserve, the tricky part is, recognizing the signs to improve your quality of life when they are presented to you. To do this we must still the mind, in this way we have a better chance of accessing our lives and seeing more clearly the situation.
Degrees of Depression and Anxiety
I’m aware that there are various degrees of depression and anxiety and what may work for you may not work for someone else, so the message is to keep searching for the mode of healing that best suits you.
So what do we do when we have reached a cross-road and you desperately need some direction or could do with some healing?
Below I’ve listed some basic points that have helped to lift my spirit and with practice will also help yours:
- Meditation is always a good starting point, there are many classes and many different types of meditation techniques to choose from, explore these techniques and find one that suits you, they needn’t be expensive and in some cases you may find a class that is offered for free. If you aren’t into classes or you are unable because of physical restraints to attend a class, try putting some meditation music on and spending time in quiet contemplation it can soothe your soul and reconnect you with the highest aspect of yourself. You can download some very good meditation music from the internet along with guided meditation.
- Aromatherapy and Essential Oils can re balance and rejuvenate your spirit through blending a selection of essential oils together in an aromatherapy oil burner. I’ve found the following blend works extremely well when there’s a need for nurturing, support and healing:
- Approximately an hour before retiring to bed place a few drops of the following in an aromatherapy oil burner with some water (for safety’s sake, extinguish the flame before lights are turned off for the night):
- 4 drops Jasmine
- 4 drops Rose
- 4 drops Neroli
- 3 drops Lavender
- 3 drops Bergamot
- These oils have a calming and soothing effect that will help you to sleep like a baby, anxiety and stress disappear, and you will feel like the weight of the world has lifted from your shoulders by the following morning! If you have a small bedroom you might like to half the amount of drops).
- Breathe! Stand with feet a shoulder-length apart. Take 3 slow and deep breaths using the diaphragm muscles. Breathe in through the nose, and breathe out through slightly parted lips. As you do these imagine you’re inhaling your personal power, filling every cell in your body, from your diaphragm up to the top of your head.
- Be your personal power and notice how much taller, straighter and stronger you become. Repeat the steps above.
- Be in the Present Moment. Take a few deep breaths and focus totally on this moment, right now.
- If you’re reading a book or magazine, or even this article, totally focus on the words and take in their meaning. There is only you and this article now in the present moment.
- If you’re in the workplace, focus totally on the task at hand, and only this task, and what you must do in order to complete it. Nothing else matters except you and the task at hand.
- Set an intention. When I’m on the lookout for something new and useful for me, I set my intention on what it is I’m after.
- Make an effort to meet new people or learn something new.
- Keep your body moving, if you find it difficult to find a quite place to walk or jog, even taking a brisk walk around a shopping mall will help to recharge you.
- Prayer is also a great healer and helps in times of distress.
- Last but nor least is Omega three – I am a great advocate of Omega three, especially as I have seen results by using Omega three during a down time in my life and seen results with others diagnosed with bi-polar using Omega three in large doses with remarkable results.
