Thyroid Dysfunction and High Acidic Levels

A buildup of acids in your system, resulting from insufficient digestion of food, consumption of acid forming substances and food allergies, can be a likely cause of thyroid dysfunction. Causes of thyroid dysfunction and high acid levels also include contact with heavy metals and toxic chemicals in the water supply as well as highly processed food. When your systems acid level rises too high, your thyroid function will be depressed and your metabolism will become sluggish.

Insufficient digestive enzymes, as a result of an over consumption of processed foods, increases the likelihood of thyroid disorder and your body’s ability to neutralize acids is further reduced. As we age, we are exposed to a greater amount of toxins, the risks then become higher that you will develop a thyroid disorder.

Risks associated with High acidic levels

  • The thyroid regulates the rate of energy production in your body’s cells and reduces the body’s metabolism and makes you feel sluggish.
  • Thyroid dysfunction also increases your risk of degenerative diseases such as cancer, heart disease and arthritis and your risk of widespread infection. In more severe cases, the energy level in the body’s cells cannot even sustain a basic level of metabolism, setting up a life-threatening situation.
  • Thyroid disorder is often misdiagnosed in tests, although your tests may indicate that you do not have thyroid disorder, you may still be at risk if you body is highly acidic.
  • If your tests indicate that your thyroid is functioning normally it is imperative that you check you body’s pH level
  • If tests show that your body is acidic it is advisable to take dietary steps to reduce the acidic levels as a preventative measure.
  • Taking measures to reduce your acidic levels will reduce the liklehood of developing thyroid disorder and at the same time improve your overall health.

The Risks

  • Having a thyroid disorder, your body’s organs and cells are not able metabolize as quickly as they should. The presence of high acidic levels only makes the problem worse. Your cells and organs will become overrun with acid that they need to eliminate, but your thyroid disorder will reduce their ability to accommodate these acids. The acid, consequently, will perpetuate or worsen your thyroid disorder.
  • A sluggish thyroid reinforces the digestive problems that cause acid to accumulate in your body. Because a thyroid disorder slows your cellular metabolism, it reduces your body’s ability to eliminate acid waste. The more acid-forming substances you consume, the more this cycle repeats.
  • Thyroid disorder also reduces your immune system function, resulting in chronic infection. With the buildup of acid in your system, infection will spread quickly, reducing your body’s capabilities to neutralize acids.
  • Like other organs in the body, the thyroid needs glucose and oxygen to function. When acid waste accumulates within bloodstream, these vital substances can’t filter through. Lacking sufficient glucose and oxygen, thyroid function is compromised. The resulting thyroid disorder further reduces the body’s capacity to clear the bloodstream of these acids that inhibit the oxygen and glucose from getting through.

The benefits of a balanced pH

Because thyroid discover causes so many other degenerative diseases, a thyroid that functions properly can restore health in many other areas of your body. When you neutralize the acids in your body and eliminate acid-forming substances from your diet, you give your thyroid a chance to heal. Improved thyroid function will, consequently, help your other body organs function the way they should.

To neutralize acids and restore your body to a balanced alkaline and acid balance, you need to reduce or eliminate consumption of acidic foods and other acidic substances. Adding more alkaline foods and minerals to your diet can help restore thyroid disorder. As your acid level falls, you’ll find that your thyroid function will increase. Your body’s metabolism will increase as a result, and you’ll be able to neutralize acids even further. The end result will be restored health, higher energy, and a decreased risk of thyroid disorder.

Approximately two per cent* of the population – over 1-million people in the UK – suffer from either an underactive or overactive thyroid. After twenty-five years at the forefront of the complementary medicine movement, Dr Rothfeld provides the tools patients need to take charge of their own treatments by integrating conventional and alternative options for the recognition of, and management of thyroid problems.
